How is Trauma-Focused Psychotherapy different from typical individual psychotherapy?

Trauma-focused therapy represents a paradigm shift, focusing on understanding the root causes of distress by asking, “What happened to you?” rather than “What's wrong with you?” This approach emphasizes understanding a women's complete history, both past and present, to provide effective therapeutic care.

  • Recognizes the impact of trauma. Trauma-focused care acknowledges the many ways trauma can manifest and how it affects women's lives.
  • Creates a safe environment. Trauma-focused care prioritizes a women's safety and well-being.
  • Involves a women in her care. Trauma-focused care gives women a voice in their treatment plan and encourages them to be active participants in the decision-making process.
  • Integrates trauma awareness into all aspects of care. Trauma-focused care is an organizational change process that requires all aspects of an organization to be aware of trauma and take steps to prevent re-traumatization.
  • Empowers women. Trauma-focused care gives a women a chance to rebuild a sense of control and empowerment.

Techniques of Trauma-Focused Psychotherapy

Trauma-focused psychotherapy is a collaborative treatment that helps women work through problems and improve their quality of life. It's based on a therapeutic relationship between a client and a mental health professional, and involves a variety of techniques and approaches:

  • Dialogue- Women talk openly with a therapist about their thoughts and feelings, and work together to identify and change unhelpful patterns.
  • Techniques- Women learn and practice techniques like mindfulness, meditation, breathing exercises, and exposure therapy.
  • Goal setting- Women and psychologist work together to set treatment goals and decide how often to meet.
  • Psychotropic medications- Added to a women's treatment plan after non-pharmacological alternatives have been applied and continues to have emotional distress interfering with levels of functioning.
  • Support- Women receive emotional support and learn coping strategies.
  • Safety- Women learn to create a safety plan for thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Trauma-focused psychotherapy can help women with a variety of issues that derive from a traumatic experience, including: depression, anxiety, medical illness, and loss. The type of psychotherapy and the severity of symptoms determine how long it takes to see results. Clients may experience intense emotions during sessions, and may feel exhausted afterward.

Psychotherapy Descriptions

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): structured form of psychotherapy used to treat PTSD and other trauma-related conditions. It involves processing traumatic memories while engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically eye movements, to help individuals reduce distress and change how they perceive and remember the traumatic experience.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): short-term, goal-oriented therapy that helps individuals identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. It's often used for conditions like anxiety, depression, and phobias.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): form of CBT that focuses on regulating emotions and improving interpersonal skills. It's often used for individuals with borderline personality disorder and other complex mental health conditions.
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT): a specific type of cognitive behavioral therapy designed to help children and adolescents who have experienced trauma, as well as their non-offending caregivers. It is an evidence-based treatment approach that addresses a range of trauma-related outcomes, including PTSD, depression, anxiety, and behavioral problems.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT):  form of psychotherapy, as well as a branch of clinical behavior analysis. It is an empirically-based psychological intervention that uses acceptance and mindfulness strategies along with commitment and behavior-change strategies to increase psychological flexibility
