Chemical peels are one of the oldest practices within aesthetic practice, involving the use of natural acids and abrasive substances to exfoliate the skin. While modern chemical peels are more refined, the core concept of using chemicals to improve skin appearance has been around for a long time. Chemical peels are offered in three main depths: superficial, medium, and deep. At Well & Being for Women we offer superficial and medium peels. Within these categories, several types of peels are available, including glycolic, lactic, salicylic, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA) peels, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels, and Jenner peels. Our aesthetic nurse practitioner will determine and discuss the type of peel and its depth for a clients's individual skin concerns and needs. Chemical Peel procedures include applying a chemical solution to the skin to remove the top layers to stimulate new skin growth. Procedure may cause a burning/tingling sensation. Treatment time varies depending on the type of peel used. After the procedure, the skin may be red, swollen, and tender. There are three types of Chemical peels: superficial-depth peels, medium-depth peels and deep-depth peels.
Duration: 45-60 minutes
Downtime: 3-14 days, depending on treatment
Please note, chemical peels should not be administered to pregnant or breastfeeding (lactating) women.

Downtime: significant time, varies
Skin is thoroughly cleansed to remove any makeup, oils, or impurities, creating a smooth, even surface for the peel solution to penetrate. Sensitive areas (such as around the eyes and lips) are protected with a barrier like petroleum jelly.
A chosen chemical solution is applied evenly to the skin.
Different chemicals are used for different depths of peels, with glycolic, trichloroacetic, or salicylic acid. The application method can vary depending on the peel type and agent.
The chemical solution is left on the skin for a specific amount of time. Absorption times do vary depending on the chemical being applied.
After the allotted time, the solution is removed, or a neutralizing solution is applied. Cold compresses or a fan may be used to soothe the skin.
Prep your skin for a chemical peel. These tips can help enhance a clients' results and minimize the risk of side effects.
Avoid exfoliating at least one week before your appointment. Chemical peels are intensely exfoliating themselves, so you do not need to treat your skin beforehand. Over-exfoliating strips your natural skin barrier, leaving your skin more sensitive and vulnerable to irritation.
In addition to drinking enough water, you should apply hydration products to your skin to ensure it’s well-hydrated before treatment. Hydration ensures maximum skin health, which reduces sensitivity and irritation from treatment. It can also accelerate the natural healing process after your peel, leading to even more beautiful results.
Except for hyaluronic acid, you should not apply any topicals containing acids such as salicylic acid, alpha hydroxy acid, or glycolic acid. Retinols, retinoids, and tretinoin (Retin-A) should also be avoided at least 5 days before treatment.
The two reasons for this, include: products can be harsh on your skin and make it more sensitive to the peel, and depending on the type of peel you are having, these ingredients could cause adverse reactions.
We love Alastin Gentle Face Cleanser, Alastin Ultra Calm Face Cleanser, and Moor Spa Cleansing Milk (see below our list of suggested products) to prepare for a peel. The right cleanser will remove dirt from your pores without stripping away too much natural oil or disrupting your skin’s pH balance.
Avoid shaving, waxing, or tweezing for at least 24 hours before your appointment. It’s best to avoid having any openings on the skin that could cause the peel to irritate the pores or hair follicles.
Gentle Skin Care Products:
We recommend using medical-grade skin care products as they contain higher concentrations of active ingredients and offer deeper penetration into the skin, leading to more significant and visible results.

To help you steer your recovery journey, here’s a quick snapshot:
*See the follow chart below.
Hydration is Key
Keeping your skin hydrated is crucial during the recovery period. Here’s how you can ensure your skin stays moisturized:
Sun Protection
Your skin is particularly vulnerable to sun damage after a chemical peel. Protecting it from UV rays is non-negotiable. Apply Broad Spectrum SPF 30 or Higher (see our recommend products above): Apply sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, even if you’re indoors. Reapply every two hours if you’re outside.
Follow Our Skincare Advice
Our recommended aftercare instructions are sent to clients once appointments are confirmed and are also available on our website.
As your skin heals, maintaining a gentle routine is essential:
Let's just take it easy! Avoiding activities that increase body heat, like strenuous exercise or hot showers, helps reduce irritation and aids in the healing process. Gentle activities like walking or light yoga are acceptable, but avoid activities that cause heavy sweating or raise your core temperature. Prioritizing relaxation helps to create a calm and supportive environment for your skin to heal effectively.
We recommend an in-person follow up appointment with our office 2-3 weeks following. Appointments can be sooner if the client is experiencing concerns or complications.
When to have another peel? Frequency depends on the type of peel and skin characteristics. Light peels can be done every 4-6 weeks, while medium peels should be spaced 3-4 months apart, and deep peels may be done once every 2-3 years.
Are chemical peels safe?
Yes! As long as proper procedure and hygiene are performed. Medical-grade chemical peels should be performed by professional licensed staff. However, it's crucial to choose the right type of peel and follow post-treatment care instructions to minimize potential risks. At-home peels, especially strong ones, can be dangerous and should be avoided.
How long does it take to heel from a chemical peel?
Healing Timeline: The chemical peel process day by day can vary based on the type of peel you receive. For lighter peels, expect around one week for the flaking and peeling to subside. Medium to deep peels might take up to two weeks for the swelling to decrease, although redness could persist for up to three months.
How can I speed up the recovery process?
Moisturizing: Keeping your skin well-hydrated is crucial. Use a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to soothe and protect your skin as it heals.
SPF Protection: Apply sunscreen daily, even indoors, to shield your skin from harmful UV rays. Reapply every two hours if you’re outside to ensure continuous protection.
Gentle Skincare: Simplify your routine with mild, non-irritating products. Cleanse gently and avoid any scrubbing. Consider using a humidifier to maintain moisture levels in your environment, which can aid in recovery.
*By adhering to these guidelines, you can steer the healing process more smoothly and enjoy the refreshed skin that follows a chemical peel. Patience and proper care are essential to achieving the best results.
