What are Pharmacogenetics?
Pharmacogenetics (PGx) is the effect genetics play on the reaction and breakdown of medications. An individual's genetic makeup, or genotype, is their inherited DNA code, serving as the building blocks of the body. The use of
pharmacogenetics helps identify which medications may work more effectively.
Additionally, determine a client's tolerance, optimum dosage levels and risks of potential side effects.
Why should a client get tested?
Many people become frustrated at the lack of response to first-line medications used to treat mental health concerns. Testing can provide guidance in which medications may work better for an individual's body, as well as which medications to avoid due to high risk of adverse effects. Genotype testing narrows down the window of options so that prescribers can have a better chance of success. Testing is recommended when a client has experienced failed medication treatment(s) for any mental health condition, or if they desire a better understanding of their body's reaction to psychotropic medications. Genetic compositions do not change - so the results are valid for the duration of a client's life.
What does the test involve?
Testing samples are obtained in-person at our office. Our staff will obtain a small buccal (inner cheek) tissue sample. This procedure takes under 2 minutes, sample is obtained using a medical cotton swab, and is painless. Samples are then securely sent to the Genomind lab for processing and testing. Once the lab receives the sample, results are back in 3-5 business days. Test results are confidentially provided to our office for review, consultation and pharmacological prescribing as warranted.
How much does Genomind cost?
The coverage for the genetic testing varies by insurance, and all billing for the tests are coordinated directly through Genomind and a client's insurance carrier. Our office will assist clients with contacting Genomind so all financial questions and concerns are clarified prior to testing.
